Chiesa di San Giusto e San Clemente
Iniziata il 28 ottobre 1628 su disegno dell’architetto Giovanni Coccapani e realizzata dal suo scolaro Ludovico Incontri, venne consacrata dal vescovo Galletti nel 1775. Sostituì una chiesa preesistente inghiottita dalle balze nel XVII secolo e denominata San Giusto al Botro; questa fu eretta sulle antiche grotte sepolcrali dei Santi Giusto e Clemente, patroni della Città. L’edificio è inquadrato scenograficamente da quattro colonne lapidee del X secolo, provenienti dalla vecchia chiesa, sormontate da statue in terracotta; la facciata è delimitata da due paraste terminanti con obelischi, le due centrali paraste supportano il frontone. All’interno sono conservati i resti dei due Santi e molte opere di valore.
The construction of the Church began on the 28th of October 1628 according to the design by the architect Giovanni Coccapani and completed by his pupil Ludovico Incontri. The Church, consecrated by Bishop Galletti in 1775, was built to replace the San Giusto al Botro church erected on the spot of the burial site of the patron saints of Volterra, Saint Giusto and Saint Clemente, lost in the landslip in the area now known as Le Balze. The Church is scenographically adorned by four stone columns dating back to the 10th century salvaged from the original Church and surmounted by four statues in terracotta. The simple facade is framed by two vertical shafts each surmounted by an obelisk and two central vertical shafts that support the pediment. The interior preserves the relics of the two saints and many valuable works of art.
