A good number of works of art collected throughout the 19th century were exhibited in the prestigious City Hall, the Palazzo dei Priori in 1905. One of the first illustrious visitors was Gabriele D’Annunzio (October 1909) who described some of the paintings of the collection including the celebrated Deposition by “Rosso Fiorentino”. In 1981 the collection was relocated to the 15th century Palazzo Minucci-Solaini.
The Art Gallery houses many outstanding works of art including:
– The Descent from the Cross by Rosso Fiorentino
– The Annunciation and The Virgin enthroned with Saints by Luca Signorelli
– Madonna and Child with Saints by the local artist “Il Volterrano”” Baldassarre Franceschini
– The Virgin enthroned and Child with Saints, a polyptych by Taddeo di Bartolo
– Christ in Pietà by a local artist Francesco Neri
– Madonna and Child by Jacopo di Michele known as “Il Gera”
– Christ in Glory and Saints by Domenico Ghirlandaio
– Adoration of the Shepherds and the Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Pieter de Witte
– The Justice by Daniele Ricciarelli from Volterra known as “Il Braghettone”
– Annunciation, the Immaculate Conception and Lamentation over the Dead Christ by “Pomarancio”
– Birth of the Virgin Mary by Donato Mascagni
– Saint Bernardino by Priamo della Quercia
