Porta San Francesco

Also known as Santo Stefano or Pisana, because it led to Pisa through the Val d’Era. It is the only gate whose vault retains traces of frescoes, which, as we know, were present in all the city’s access gates. Inside, on the right, is carved the Pisan cane, a unit of measurement slightly longer than the Volterran one, carved on the facades of the Palazzo dei Priori.
